What’s the relationship of density, thickness and weight of PTFE tapes?

What’s the relationship of density, thickness and weight of PTFE tapes? The PTFE tape manufacturer tell you the following information:

There is a formula can use: Density = weight/length ×width ×thickness.

For example, the specification of tape is Length 20m, Thickness 0.1mm, Width 12mm, and weight is 6g, which is very normal tape. So the density =6g/1.2cm×0.01cm×2000cm = 0.25g/cm3.

We hope the above information which Teflon tape manufacturer offered can help you understand relationships of them .

How to Use Plumber's Thread Seal Tape

How to use plumbers tapes? The plumbers tape manufacturer will tell you the following information:

Plumber’s thread seal tape, also known as Teflon tape or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), is thin, white and sold in rolls in hardware, plumbing and home improvement stores. The tape acts as a lubricant during the pipe connecting process, creating a secure seal. It also helps prevent water leaks at threaded pipe joint connection points. Proper application of the plumber’s thread seal tape is necessary to prevent water pressure problems and clogs.

Proper application of the plumber’s thread seal tape is necessary to prevent water pressure problems and clogs.

Grip the end of the tape with your fingers. Press the end of the plumber’s thread seal tape against the pipe threads on the male end of the pipe, at a distance of 1/8 inch from the bottom of the pipe.

Begin wrapping the plumber’s thread seal tape around the male end of the pipe in the same direction that the threads are going. Overlap ½ of the width of the plumber’s tape on each rotation, but do not overlap the tape end on the first pass.

Continue to wrap the pipe threads with the tape, holding the plumber’s tape taught as you go. Cover all of the pipe threads with the tape while wrapping, slightly overlapping each row of tape as you proceed to the next.
Stretch the tape on the final pass to tear it from the spool. Firmly press the torn end of the plumber’s thread seal tape against the pipe to secure.

Tips & Warnings

http://ptfe-tape.com

Do not use too much plumber’s tape. Two passes on the initial round and one to two passes over the remaining pipe threads (with a slight overlap) is all that is necessary. Too much tape on the pipe will affect the connection, possibly causing a leak.

Never apply plumbing compound and plumbing tape together. The combination will not create an appropriate seal.

The above informtion is from PTFE tape manufacturer.

How do you use seal thread tape ?

How To Use Teflon seal Tape

Teflon tape is a very thin white tape used to wrap the threaded ends of metal and plastic pipes to lubricate the threads and prevent leaks where pipes join. The thin tape fills the minute gap between the male and female pipe threads stopping water leaks. The alternative is to use pipe dope, a paste type material which also seals and lubricates, allowing for a tighter joint. There is also a another variety of Teflon seal thread tape that is yellow. The yellow tape is heavier and is for use on gas line connections. Never use regular, white, Teflon thread seal  tape on gas connections.

  • Clean the pipe threads with a rag before applying the Teflon tape.
  • Start wrapping the male threads at very end of the pipe, but do not let the tape lap over the end. If the tape laps over the end of the pipe it can reduce water pressure and even cause clogs from bits of the tape that get pulled into the water line.
  • Start with a couple loops around at the end, then wrap all the threads, overlapping half the width of the tape on each wind.
  • Wrap in the direction of the threads starting from the end and proceeding toward the length of the pipe. Wrapping the wrong way may result in the tape coming unwound as the fittings are tightened.
  • As you wrap, keep tension on the tape so that it is pulled into the threads.
  • If you loosen or disconnect a fitting, remove the old tape and re-wrap it with a fresh piece.

How to Use PTFE Teflon Plumbers Thread Seal Tape to Stop Water Leaks ?

This article is going to look at the standard white plumbers tape that is used for preventing leaks from joints, for example on radiator valves or taps.

The correct way to apply the plumber tape to stop leaks is to follow the direction of the thread, as if you were tightening up the nut. 99.9% of the time, nuts tighten up clockwise, so this is the way you should also apply the PTFE tape.

For the sake of proving the point, you could wind the tape anti-clockwise onto the thread. If you are right-handed, you will probably find it quite awkward to do, but more importantly, when you try and screw the nut on, you’ll find that the PTFE will start to come off. This obviously renders the PTFE tape completely useless and highlights exactly why you should wrap it around the thread in a clockwise motion.

When applying the tape clockwise, it’s recommended that you wrap it around the thread three or four times. This is thick enough to prevent leaks, but not too thick that you can’t get the nut on. When putting the nut on over clockwise-wound tape, you’ll see if fits over easily and the tape does not start to come off, in contrast to when it was wound anti-clockwise.

If you are installing a new central heating component (like a radiator or a radiator valve) then it’s advisable to use plumbers tape stop leaks and some silicone-based jointing compound, to make the joint completely watertight.

After putting on the PTFE tape, you can apply a liberal amount of jointing compound around the thread and smooth it round with your finger. You don’t need to put too much on and you can wipe off any excess before putting on the nut. The combination of the PTFE and the compound really helps to enable that the joints will not leak.

Most plumbers tape to stop water leaks will recommend using the PTFE tape and jointing compound on any new heating installation. This is because it’s so much easier to do it first time round, rather than draining everything down again in order to apply it. Better to get it right the first time, rather than create a headache for yourself further down the line.

What’s the difference of yellow Teflon gas tape with white plumbers tape?

When installing the gas stove, I believe that you will find the Teflon seal tape which worker using is yellow color; it is different with the usually seen white plumbers tape for water pipe.  The yellow PTFE seal tape is the gas dedicated seal tape. So what is the difference between yellow Teflon seal tape and white plumbers tape for water pipe?

In fact, gas seal tape and plumbers seal tape are basically the same, main raw materials both are polytetrafluoroethylene. But there is still a little bit different between them.

Gas Teflon seal tape with higher temperature and anti-aging characteristics, it can be stable working at 250 ° C for long time. At the same time its pressure performance is particularly good, it can be long-term use under the pressure of 20-30MPA, and the general pressure of the gas furnace is not so highpressure.

Whenever you install a gas pipe, it is best to use soap water to double check for confirming there is no leaking, or you can smell with the nose. If you really are not familiar with this working, please ask the professional worker for help you to install gas pipeline, to prevent gas leak.

How to Use Teflon Tape on Pipe Threads

How to Use Teflon Tape on Pipe Threads

If you’ve ever used Teflon seal tape on pipe threads, and it’s not something you regularly do, you may have asked yourself if it matters which way the tape is wrapped onto the pipe. It does, indeed, matter.

As Leah points out in the video, the basic thing you need to know is that the tape for water leaks needs to go onto the threads clock-wise. So, if you’re right-handed and applying the tape with your right hand, you want to wrap the tape into the threads away from you. Lefties will want to wrap towards them. Ultimately, you just want to make sure that the tape goes onto the threads in a clockwise direction.

Leah also points out that you want to make sure that you get the seal tape close to the threaded end of the pipe, but not too close. You don’t want the tape to travel over the lip of the pipe and get the tape inside of the throat where it can contaminate the water supply and introduce an obstacle which might block the flow.

You also want to make sure that the PTFE Teflon tape sits snugly inside of the threads. To achieve this, you want to introduce a decent amount of tension on the tape as you wrap it around the pipe. The tape, especially the regular grade Teflon tape, is very stretchy, so you want to make sure you don’t pull too tight. In general, you want to wrap the Teflon thread seal tape around the pipe for 3-5 turns so it produce a fairly snug seal. Check the packaging on the tape that you’re using. It usually tells you how many turns are recommended for that product. And it can vary.

How do I wrap pipe threads with PTFE tapes ?

When wrapping pipe threads with thread seal tape ( plumbers tape),  what is the direction and recommended number of times to wrap the tape around the threads? Any other recommendations or tip/tricks when applying teflon tape?

Wrap clockwise - i.e. in the same direction as the tightening action of the nut. This means that you are also tightening the tape around the thread.
If you wrap anti-clockwise I find that the tape bunches up and comes away.
As for the number of layers - I usually wrap the tape around at least twice, maybe even three or four times.

For the correct number of times to wrap the tape, check the instructions on the tape package (that tiny little printing in white plastic you can barely read). It should tell you. Different manufacturers will have different specs on this (depending on the thickness of the tape).
I highly recommend the higher-density pink teflon tape. It is a tiny bit more expensive, but I have found that it stays put on the threads much better and seals better.
The pink tape I use (CFPC) says:
  • 3 full wraps for pipes up to 1"
  • 4 wraps for pipes 1" - 1.5"
  • not to exceed pipes > 1.5"
Using too much tape is bad, too little is bad.
Oh, and ditto what ChrisF said about wrapping the tape in the proper direction!

Thread Tapes Information

Thread seal tape are used to seal, lubricate, and prevent seizure on threaded bolts, studs, and fittings. They are commonly referred to as:
Thread tapes are usually made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a highly crystalline, perfluorinated polymer that is better known by its DuPont brand and registered trademark—Teflon. PTFE tape has an extremely low coefficient of friction, good chemical resistance, and good heat resistance. Chemical inertness prevents cross-linking and makes PTFE thread tapes a good choice for applications that involve corrosive chemicals such as liquid oxygen, or caustics such as ammonium hydroxide. Thread tapes can also be made of polyethylene (PE), a low-cost plastic that resists water and many chemicals.

Specifications

Thread tapes carry specifications such as:
  • density
  • tensile strength
  • elongation
  • dimensions
  • substrate compatibility
PTFE thread tape manufacture  describe their products as either high-density or low-density. High-density PTFE thread tapes usually have a density of .70 g/cm3 or 1.2 g/cm3. Low-density PTFE thread tapes usually have a density of .37 g/cm3. Tensile strength is the force required to break a piece of thread tape by pulling on opposite ends. Elongation is the fractional increase in a thread tape’s length due to stress in tension or to thermal expansion. Important dimensions for thread tapes include length, width, and thickness. With regard to substrate compatibility, some Teflon tapes are designed for use with pipes, tubes, or conduits made of aluminum, black iron, or brass. Other PTFE thread seal tape adheres to chrome, copper, glass, plastic, or rubber.

Standards

PTFE thread seal tapes follow two basic quality standards and are color-coded for a variety of applications. MIL-T-27730A is a U.S. military specification (MIL-SPEC) that specifies a minimum thickness of 3 mils. A-A-58092 is a commercial standard that maintains the thickness requirement of MIL-T-27730A, but adds a minimum density standard. White PTFE thread tape provides tight seals for a variety of threaded joints and is suitable for most plumbing and potable water systems. Yellow PTFE thread tape is designed for use with pipes, conduits, bolts, valves, and threaded gas lines that carry air, ammonia, butane, chlorine, or hydrogen. Pink Teflon tape is made of heavy-duty, industrial grade PTFE and is used in commercial or industrial plumbing applications. Green Teflon thread tapes may be used in oxygen-handing applications.

The above information is from PTFE tape machine manufacture, and we hope above information can help you know a general idea of PTFE Teflon tapes.

When to use PTFE Teflon Yellow or White tapes or Pipe Dope

When to use White PTFE Teflon Tape  or Yellow tapes or Pipe Dope

The purpose of thread seal tape (a.k.a. “Teflon tape”) or pipe dope is threefold:
  • First, the lubricant qualities allow male threaded pipe to be turned deeper into female threaded fittings to prevent leaks;
  • Second, it acts as a filler to smooth out micro abrasions or surface irregularities on threads;
  • Third, it keeps the male and female threads from rusting together (a.k.a. seizing);

PIPE THREAD TYPES

AN thread is a type of fitting used to connect flexible hoses and rigid metal tubing that carry fluid (it stems from a joint standard by the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, hence “AN”).
AN thread provides a positive seal that should seal correctly with specified torque torque range with no leaks. The AN should not require a thread sealant.
National Pipe Thread (NPT) taper is a U.S. standard for tapered threads used on threaded pipes and fittings.
In contrast to straight threads that are found on a bolt, a tapered thread will pull pipes and fittings tight together, providing effective seal for pipes transporting liquids, gases, steam and other fluids.
Although SAE and ASTM (organizations that set U.S. industry standards) set very precise thread class specifications, many threaded products carried by large box retailers have varying degrees of deviations from set specifications (i.e. micro surface imperfections like chatter or spalling), thus requiring a use of thread sealants.

PTFE  SEAL THREAD TAPE

When a Teflon seal tape was first introduced, it only came in a single density type (“white Teflon tape(1)“) that was commonly found in large home improvement stores. Later they began making a double density version, which was twice as thick in the same color (unfortunately with the same “white” color).
(1)Teflon tape is used ubiquitously when referring to a thread sealant tape. However, the word “Teflon” is a trademark name owned by Dupont Chemical Corp. Although Dupont no longer manufacturers Teflon tapes, it still enforces its trademark rights. That is why you see other manufacturers like Oatey refers to it as PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene) thread sealant tapes.
One very important thing to remember is that PTFE thread sealant tapes and pipe joint compounds are only to be used on NPT male threads. Neither should be used on SAE mechanical threads or as a gasket sealer (i.e. sink basket gasket).

Teflon THREAD SEAL TAPE COLORS

Since many state and local codes adopted the use of double density tapes when making connections for natural gas, the use of same color for two different thickness presented a challenge when time came to inspect a job. Thus, a “yellow TEFLON tape” was later introduced for such application.
Since then, ASTM has broadened the specifications for PTFE tape colors:
  • Whitesingle or double density, should only be used on NPT threads up to 3/8 inch in diameter
  • Yellow, double density, often labeled as “gas tape”
  • Pinktriple density, required on all joints 1/2″ or larger
  • Green,Oil Free PTFE tape, required for use on all lines carrying oxygen (i.e. – medical oxygen or welding oxygen lines)
The above information is from PTFE tape manufacture and we hope the above information can help you understand types of Teflon thread seal tapes.

What is PTFE Tape?

What is PTFE Tape?

PTFE stands for "polytetrafluoroethylene" and is a Teflon plastic polymer. It is commonly made in tape form and used by plumbers to lubricate and seal threaded pipe fittings. It has a number of unique properties that make it widely used for many different applications.

Low Friction

  • Fluorinated plastic polymers known as Teflon include PTFE. PTFE has a very low coefficient of friction--it is slippery. This makes it an ideal treatment for plumbers to wrap on pipe threads to make pipe fittings screw together more easily. It conforms to objects and acts as a gasket, improving the fit and seal of conjoined fittings.

Heat Resistant

  • PTFE has an extraordinarily high melting point for a plastic, 327 degrees Celsius or 621 degrees F. It is rated for use at temperatures up to 260 degrees Celsius, 500 degrees F. For most applications, PTFE will not degrade from exposure to heat.

Electrical Insulator

  • PTFE an excellent electrical insulator. In combination with its high heat resistance, this makes it useful in electrical applications where insulation and heat resistance are required. PTFE is manufactured as heat-shrink tubing that can be placed over wires and then heat-shrunk for a water resistant and electrically insulating fit.

Flexible and Durable

  • PTFE tape can be stretched to fit snugly around fittings or wires. It can be elongated 200 to 400 percent without tearing. PTFE is water resistant. Exposure to light has little effect on degrading PTFE, making it very durable in outdoor applications. PTFE is not affected by ultraviolet, visible or infrared light.

Chemically Inert

  • PTFE has a high resistance to both acids and bases. There is no known solvent for PTFE. The polymers in PTFE are uniformly sheathed with fluorine atoms, making PTFE inert to virtually all chemicals. Only under extraordinary circumstances will PTFE degrade. PTFE will react with metallic sodium, interhalogen compounds and ionized oxygen. It will also degrade under extreme electron bombardment. These reactive situations are not normally encountered outside of special laboratory conditions.

How to control density of Teflon tapes or quality of Teflon tapes under processing

How to control density of Teflon tapes or quality of Teflon tapes under PTFE tape making process?

In normal, final Teflon tapes products quality depends on many factors, such as raw material quality, heating time, straightness of roller for calender, stretch ratio, temperature of slitting machine, blade quality, worker’s skills and so on.

But most key factors are stretch ratio and raw material quality , these two factors are very important to quality of final teflon tapes.
